What is Fragrance-Free?
"Fragrance-Free" refers to products, such as cosmetics, personal care items, household cleaners, and more, that do not contain fragrances or perfumes. These products are designed to be free of any scents or odors that are not naturally derived from their ingredients. The absence of added fragrances is intended to reduce the risk of allergic reactions or skin sensitivities in individuals who may be sensitive or allergic to certain fragrance ingredients.
Fragrances in many consumer products are typically made up of a mixture of chemicals that can include both natural and synthetic compounds. Some people have sensitivities or allergies to these fragrance ingredients, and exposure to them can lead to skin irritations, headaches, respiratory issues, or other allergic reactions. Fragrance-free products are formulated to minimize these risks and are often recommended for individuals with fragrance allergies or sensitivities.
It's important to note that "fragrance-free" does not mean that a product is completely odorless. However, some natural ingredients like Shea butter, Coconut, & Aloe vera have a natural aroma. So, if you're sensitive to smells, please always read the ingredients before purchasing.
What symptoms can I get from fragrances?
Fragrances can trigger a wide range of symptoms in individuals who are sensitive or allergic to them. These symptoms can vary in severity from mild to severe and can manifest as:
1. Respiratory Symptoms:
- Sneezing
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Coughing
- Wheezing
- Shortness of breath
- Chest tightness
2. Skin Symptoms:
- Skin rashes or hives
- Itching
- Redness and inflammation
- Dermatitis
3. Eye Symptoms:
- Red, itchy, or watery eyes
- Swelling around the eyes
4. Headache and Migraine:
- Many individuals experience headaches or migraines triggered by fragrances.
5. Nausea and Gastrointestinal Symptoms:
- Nausea
- Upset stomach
6. Neurological Symptoms:
- Dizziness
- Confusion
- Cognitive difficulties
- Fatigue
- Brain fog
7. Generalized Allergic Reactions:
- Anaphylaxis (in severe cases): This is a life-threatening allergic reaction that can cause difficulty breathing, swelling of the throat, a drop in blood pressure, and loss of consciousness. Anaphylaxis requires immediate medical attention.
It's important to note that fragrance sensitivity can vary from person to person, and what triggers symptoms in one individual may not affect another. Some people are more sensitive to certain fragrances or specific chemicals within fragrances. Common sources of fragrance exposure include perfumes, colognes, scented lotions, air fresheners, candles, cleaning products, and more.
Suppose you suspect you have fragrance sensitivity or experience any of these symptoms in response to fragrances. In that case, it's essential to consult a healthcare professional for proper diagnosis and guidance on managing your condition. In some cases, avoiding exposure to fragrances or using fragrance-free products may be recommended as part of a management plan.
Are unscented products the same as fragrance-free?
Some unscented products include chemicals that mask the smell of fragranced substances, so even though they may not have a scent, they may still contain fragrance.
Please note - even though we sell some unscented products, these do NOT contain any fragrances or masking chemicals.
Does fragrance-free mean I get free fragrances?
Believe it or not, many people think fragrance-free means you get free fragrances, but this is not the case. When a product is labelled as "fragrance-free," it means that no additional perfumes or scents have been added to the product's formulation, making it suitable for individuals with fragrance sensitivities or allergies. It's about the absence of fragrances, not the provision of free fragrances.
I'm highly sensitive to smells, what products do you suggest?
For individuals with heightened sensitivity to odours, I, as the owner, have compiled a list of personal product choices. Given that everyone's tolerance for scents varies, I cannot guarantee that these products are entirely odour-free.
